About this trip
Borjomi is a spa town in a wooded gorge, known well beyond Georgia for its mineral water. The park is a pleasant walk whether or not you like the taste.
Further south, the Rabati fortress stands in the old part of Akhaltsikhe. Then Vardzia, the reason for the drive: Queen Tamar's monastery, cut into the cliff in the twelfth century across thirteen levels. An earthquake in 1283 brought down the outer face of the rock and left the rooms open to view. Entrance fees are paid separately, on the spot.
This is a very long day, around eight and a half hours of driving. Leave early, and do not plan anything else for the evening.
