About this trip
The road to David Gareja runs through the village of Udabno and then across open steppe, which is as much a reason to come as the monastery itself. The complex was founded in the sixth century and is cut into the rock of a ridge on the Azerbaijan border. The last stretch is unpaved, and we send a car suited to it. From the main monastery a path climbs the ridge to the Udabno monastery and its frescoes. That walk crosses the border line, so follow the signs and local advice on the day. This is a working monastery: cover shoulders and knees. Bring water and a hat — there is little shade. Around three and a half hours of driving in total.
