About this trip
Kakheti is Georgia's main wine region. Making wine in qvevri, clay vessels buried in the ground, is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage, and many cellars here still work that way. The day starts at Bodbe Monastery, where St Nino is buried, with the Alazani Valley below and the Caucasus beyond it on a clear day. Sighnaghi is a short drive up the hill: a small walled town that is best seen on foot. The afternoon is for the cellars around Telavi. Tastings are paid separately, on the spot, and your driver will not steer you to a particular cellar. Expect about five hours of driving in total.
