About this trip
The Georgian Military Highway follows the Aragvi north from Tbilisi. The first stop is the Zhinvali reservoir, and just beyond it Ananuri, a seventeenth-century fortress with its churches at the water's edge. The road then climbs past Gudauri to the Jvari Pass, where the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument, a mosaic-covered viewpoint, looks over the valley. In Stepantsminda, Gergeti Trinity Church stands at 2,170 metres, with Mount Kazbek (5,054 metres) behind it when the cloud lifts. If a car can't make the last climb on the day, local 4x4s go up from Stepantsminda, paid on the spot. Expect about six hours of driving plus the stops, which means leaving early. From November to April the pass can close at short notice; if it does, the trip is moved or refunded.
