About this trip
Jvari Monastery, from the sixth century, stands on the ridge above the point where the Aragvi joins the Mtkvari. Below it is Mtskheta, the old capital, with the eleventh-century Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Both belong to the Historical Monuments of Mtskheta, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
From there the road runs west to Uplistsikhe, a town cut into the rock and used from the first millennium BC. The ground is uneven stone, so bring water and proper shoes. Entrance is paid separately, on the spot.
The last stop is Gori, with its fortress on the hill in the middle of town. Around four and a half hours of driving in total, at an unhurried pace.
