About this trip
Racha is the quiet mountain region north of Kutaisi, and it makes a better day out than its low profile suggests. The winding road climbs past Shaori, a reservoir in the hills and a good place to stop and stretch your legs.
Nikortsminda Cathedral dates from the early eleventh century and is known for the carving on its facades, which deserves a slow walk around the outside. It is a working church, so dress modestly.
Ambrolauri is the centre of Racha and the home of Khvanchkara, a naturally semi-sweet red wine. Lunch here usually means Racha ham and lobiani, bread baked with a bean filling. Around three hours of driving in total.
